In Berlin, photographer Karin Shikata has been capturing lakes as part of daily life,
focusing on the movement of the water and the traces of light on its surface.
Although Berlin has no sea, its lakes change with time, weather, seasons, and emotion—
almost as if they are alive and reflecting the photographer’s inner world.
Kakejiku artist Ryo Ueno explored these lake scenes in a new way.
While keeping the traditional structure of Japanese *kakejiku*,
he added a contemporary vision, creating four unique scrolls.
Satin fabric and acrylic parts were used instead of traditional materials,
bringing a sense of transparency and light inspired by the lake.
This collaboration blends East and West, tradition and innovation.
The 130 cm scrolls are not confined to a traditional Japanese setting—
they invite viewers anywhere in the world into a quiet visual dialogue with Berlin’s lakes,
offering a modern and poetic experience of nature.
